At our Ladies' Morning Out on Saturday, the always-thinking Tammy Johnson shared a great tip! She distributes the Mineral Powder Foundation to each guest at a class into a paper cupcake holder. This allows them to swirl a demo brush easily and also keeps the powder from going all over the place.

Why Labor Day?



The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.[1] It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.[2] The September date was chosen as Cleveland was concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair.[3] All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parties. Speeches or political demonstrations are more low-key than May 1 Labor Day celebrations in most countries, although events held by labor organizations often feature political themes and appearances by candidates for office, especially in election years. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water sports, and public art events. Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer recess. Similarly, some teenagers and young adults view it as the last weekend for parties before returning to school, although school starting times now vary.
In U.S. sports, Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the week before Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day. The Southern 500 NASCARauto race was held that day from 1950 to 2004.

Allow Yourself to be Uncomfortable

When was the last time that you intentionally did something that made your stomach turn, your knees weak and your palms sweat?
If you can’t recall when, then you’re not making yourself uncomfortable enough to test your limits and grow.

But that’s okay – for it is human nature to avoid risks and stay within our comfort zone.

However, know that it is difficult or almost impossible to take ourselves to the “next level” without getting uncomfortable in the process.

So how do you allow yourself to be uncomfortable?

By trying out new things…
… like learning that craft or skill you’ve always wanted to have. Be a student hungry for knowledge. Commit the time to train.

… specially the fear of failure. Be courageous and persistent. Know that each mistake you do only brings you one step closer to success.

By having something important at stake…
… like your reputation. Take a challenge and announce it to the world. Be accountable. Accept responsibility.
Take an inventory of your life and write down the things you want to change. Dig within and identify what’s truly stopping you from making that change. Then create a plan and tell the people around you to expect that change to happen for you.

That’s how you become uncomfortable…

That’s how you achieve things which you thought was impossible.

Discipline Brings Freedom


The following message landed in my email inbox yesterday and I feel it is worth  sharing for sure! This is a message from NSD Jan Thetford, one of my all-time favorite people because of her devotion to the Lord and her energy for her business. Hope it blesses you!
 
"Ive been thinking alot about what Linda shared with us last week on Intelliverse - Discipline BRINGS Freedom. Its true and a topic worthy of us exploring a little!
 
In reading scripture this morning as a part of our sermon I came upon Phil. 4.:1-19. here is what Dr. John Maxwell has to say about this...very thought provoking...don't you think?
 
Self Discipline:
Paul Mastered What Would Help Him
(Phil. 4:19)
 
Phillipians 4 provides a call to discipline. Paul declares that the goal of peace and fulfillment runs through the path of self discipline. The apostle elaborates on 3 disciplines that help leaders stay aligned with there mission:
 
1. Govern your Actions (vv.1-5)
Paul pleads with his friends to stand firm. Live in harmony. Display self control.
 
2. Guard your Attitudes (vv.6-9)
He says to replace worry with prayer and to think on positive things that edify.
 
3. Give your assets (vv.10-19)
Nothing purifies more than sharing your resources and trusting God to meet your needs.
 
 
Verses 4-& in Phil. 4 are familiar verses to many of us..perhaps you will want to meditate on them this week."

Sunday Night Wind-down



In almost 15 years of Mary Kay, I've waffled back and forth on the "work my business on Sunday" question. There have been times when I felt like I had great results and was consistently able to reach people on the phone on Sundays.

Then there have been times when I've felt as if the Lord gave us a clear commandment to set aside Sundays to be a day of rest and I've completely avoided all MK business on this day.

Here's where I seem to have landed: I do as little MK business as possible on Sunday. I also do as little other work as possible on that day, including housework, bill paying, yard work, etc. If I'm going to rest, then I'm going to rest. Period.

Does this mean I never make a call or fill an order on Sundays? Nope. I will do those things and, if a woman absolutely needed some pampering and Sunday was her only day to do it, I would consider doing it if there was no other option.

Why do I feel some things are acceptable and some aren't? Simple really, I try to put every choice for how to use my time and energy on the Lord's Day through the grid of serving others. If a small bit of business serves someone else then I'm going to do it. If that same amount of business only makes me money, then, well, I'm going to wait until Monday morning if at all possible.

Like many things in our business, it all comes down to balance.

A new favorite & a Winner!

I have a new favorite to add to "Jen's It List"! It's the new Vanilla Sugar Satin Hands Set and it is great! 

 
My latest order arrived via UPS a couple days ago and I just pulled it out to try yesterday. It's wonderful--all the things we love about Satin Hands already, but also a wonderful vanilla fragrance. You know how sometimes vanilla-scented things can be really perfumy? Well not this one. It's subtle and light but still leaves a lingering scent that isn't overpowering.

The set includes the Skin Softener (same one that comes in the other Satin Hands Sets), a Vanilla Sugar Satin Smoothie Hand Scrub, and a Vanilla Sugar Hand Cream. It's just wonderful and only $34 for the set.

I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that this is a limited edition product! When it's gone, it's gone! (Remember what happened with the Rosemary Mint Pedicure Kit this past spring?) This product is launching ahead of the rest of the Holiday 2010 line, so I would assume that the Co. made plenty to go around. But I know I will be ordering many to make sure I have enough to get me through the Holidays! 

I'm thinking any extra I have after Christmas will also go great into Valentine's Day sales too. Add some pink/red packaging and it will make a beautiful set!

A Perfect Mary Kay Day!

It's the first day of school here. It's the first day of my 10-Show week. It's just one of those days that seems to be coming together.

So, today is the day! We're starting the Crown Jewels Unit blog again, this time with more gusto and more ideas to make it great! I hope you'll check it often! I intend to update approximately every other day or so. Oh, and please leave a comment too!

What's this about a perfect Mary Kay day? Well, I think I might be having one! Allow me to explain:

Did you ever wonder, "What exactly is a Mary Kay day supposed to look like? What does a Mary Kay Sales Director do with her day, what does her schedule look like?" I remember thinking that as a newer consultant. I actually asked Randi Stevens, our Senior Director, what I was supposed to do during the day.

Everyone's day is different in this business and it changes as your season of life changes too. But today I think I might have reached nirvana! I woke early to do a "before work" party at one of my customer's offices. They were thrilled as I brought fresh cinnamon rolls that I had put in the frig to rise overnight and then baked this morning. Piping hot when I arrived at the office. It was great fun and I was done by 9:30! Had sales and 1 booking with a hostess and 3 guests! Yippee!

Then ran a couple of errands, including to the farm market to get my fertilizer jug refilled with liquid fertilizer. Brought that home and immediately applied fertilizer (still in my heels and skirt, btw!).

Came inside and put in a load of laundry and answered several emails. Took an order off the answering machine, filled it and sent it out the door to the post office with my husband who was heading that way anyway-another $125 sold!

Changed clothes at this point and started the process of canning chili sauce with tomatoes that won't wait too much longer for me! Making a few phone calls to put up a couple more bookings (I am focused on this 10-Show week!) this afternoon while the tomatoes cook. I also have a list of people to follow up with from last week's parties. Pulled meat out of the freezer to thaw & to throw on the grill for dinner. Salad is prepped and in frig. Made extra large batch of dough for cinnamon rolls last night and it's in the oven while tomatoes are cooking so we'll have fresh bread with dinner too.

I have a customer who has agreed to meet with me over coffee after she gets off work tonight. I'll share the opportunity with her and plan to have a new unit member too!

Then after the interview I have a few more calls to make if time allows. After about 9:30 I'll spend about half our or so catching up on some paperwork. I'll also put away some product as I'm expecting an order in UPS this afternoon. I'll need to prepare some outstanding orders I have for delivery tomorrow too.

So that's what a busy MK day looks like for me. It includes booking, selling & recruiting activity and weaves my household responsibilities into the whole mess too.

Does every day look like this? No, but I'd be thrilled if it did!

Would I be able to complete a 10-Show Week if every day was like today? No! It takes more classes and less household stuff for that! But since I didn't have more on the book today, I'm squeezing in the family/household needs where I can.
